week 1 Childbirth In Your Life and Around the World

Write about a personal birthing experience. It can be your own birth, your child's birth, or one you took part in. What do you remember about the event? Why did you choose this example? What are your thoughts regarding birth and its impact on child development?  I choose to write about my own birthing experience it was sort of scary and exciting all at the same time. When I  was  32 weeks my son decided he wanted to try to make his entrance into the world being rushed by ambulance to the hospital about an hour away since the hospital in our area was not equip to handle premature babies and I was already 6 centimeters. On the way there I was given a medicine to try to prolong the labor. When I arrived at the hospital everyone was running around trying to get things ready. I was given medicine every hour finally after several hours that labor seemed like it stopped however I was going to be admitted so I could be on complete bed rest. I spent the next 5 weeks in the hospital as soon as I turned 37 weeks I remember the doctor saying we were going to stop the medicine and let nature take course if I felt any pain to let them know so I could get the epidural. About 10 minutes later I was in so much pain my husband went and got the nurse who said there was no way I could be in that much pain that quick but she would check me next thing I know the nurse was screaming for my husband to go get the doctor and for my not to push the head was already coming out. I kept saying I just want my pain medicine she was like honey you are too far along for that about 2 minutes later my beautiful son 6 pounds 12 oz. boy was born. Even thought he was 3 weeks early he was very healthy and has not stopped running since.  My thoughts regarding birth I think it is a very magical time. I delivered both my children without medicine not  by  my choice but I  am very glad I did so I could be wide awake and know what was going on and have the close bon we  have. As for the impact on child development I totally would recommend getting prenatal care for every child there is so many things that can go wrong and even though you know your body the best your doctor can help you make important decisions.

2 Choose a region of the world or a country, other than the U.S., and find out how births happen there. Write about what you learned, and the differences and similarities with your experience (in the personal example you provided). What additional insights, if any, about the impact of the birthing experience on development, did you gain from this comparison?  I choose to write about Japan  Some things were the same they have water births, dull a’s, walking during labor however  you  need to do your resource and find out what hospitals offer what type of births. However there was some difference such as mothers are actually pregnant 10 Lunar months as opposed to 9 calendar months. Also weight gain doctors does not want mothers to gain no more than 15 pounds throughout the entire pregnancy a lot of articles I read said this was one of the more frustrating aspects of being pregnant in Japan.  Also during labor they do not believe in epidural or any other pain medicines. A lot of fathers are not allowed to stay in the delivery room in fact due to overcrowding hospitals a lot of time women share a labor room.  Also women and children stay in the hospital for one week sometime longer if there are complications.

  1. Wow Sandi, that is so crazy how you had to stay in the hospital for so long. I know that was probably annoying. I'm glad you son came out very healthy to say he was born early. I think that the birth in Japan is very interesting. That kind of sucks that they have to put a limit on how much weight they can gain during pregnancy.

  2. I think your story about your son's birth was very exceptional. I am glad that everything was healthy with your son, but that is crazy how fast he wanted to come into the world! I also wrote about Japan's births in my post this week and found a lot of different facts about giving birth there. Only gaining 15 pounds during pregnancy I think is unnaturally scary. All cultures are different though! Great Post!
