week  4

 I choice disease it really hits home for me. Not only was this very stressful on me however a bigger one on my son. There is not a day I look back and wish I would have known more and done more. When my son was 1 he was diagnosed with what I was told was eczema which is a common skin rash for children so I went along with the doctors he would have out break after out breaks.  I took him to several doctors and dermatologist all saying try this new cream. When he was 9 I picked him up from school and he said mommy my legs are really hurting and was bleeding today, I looked at his legs they were so swollen and puffy I rushed him to the ER after hours of test and biopsy the so called eczema he was be treated for was in fact a disease called lincus plantus  he was in the hospital for over a week with constant medicine to get rid of the infection in his legs. Then he was to start radiation light therapy 3 times a week, this continued for over 6 months. He will always have the diseases however now that it is under control he can take a pill and no longer needs the light treatment. He has so much scaring on his legs and hands where the skin was stretched from the infection. I guess if I would have done more resource I could have caught it sooner but since we went to several doctors including specialist I figured they all new what they were talking about. My son would come home and tell me mean things kids would say about him he is now 20 and still refuses to wear shorts. We both went thru a lot he had to deal with the pain, being picked on by other kids, and I have the guilt of not helping him sooner. I guess us as parents and teachers never need to give up we always need to do our resource if we don’t feel something is right.

I choice Asia the biggest stress they have is poverty over 25,000 children die each day due to poverty. Around 20 % alone from Asia Children are either underweight or stunted growth. Every two people have inadequate access to water and other necessary supplies. The children there die from lack of immunization and other preventable illness if they had proper supplies. Another stressor is lack of education only 52% of boys ever enroll and 33 % of girls. Parental neglect is high in Africa include not keeping the child clean, not providing enough clothes for keeping warm, not making sure the child attended school, Despite the challenges, there are signs of some hope Improved partnerships between African and donor nations have resulted in increased aid flows being used more effectively.  In the last five years, Asia has reduced poverty from 70% to 55% and has doubled the number of children in school;

  1. I am so sorry to hear about your story about your son! It must of been very stressful to have a child go through a disease that was misdiagnosis. I hope that your family does not have to go through the stress of a disease ever again.

    I also enjoyed your facts about Asia. It is always important to realize that in the U.S. we are very lucky to not be as affected by statistics like these from other countries.

  2. I am so sorry about this also. My brother when he was a boy tried to help my mother and took hot coffee out of the microwave and spilled it on his arm. For years he wore long sleeve shirts because of the shame. Very interesting blog.

  3. My daughter who is 9 has been living with bronchial asthma. its a great stressor to her because she can't really participate in physical activties. I still can't figure out what aggravates it, i hope she outgrows it.

  4. Sandi,

    I am so sorry to hear this. We put our trust in the doctors that they know what is wrong and can fix it. I thought the facts you mentioned about poverty were interesting; I wonder what the statistics here in the USA would be for the same issues?

  5. Hi Sandi,

    I am sorry that your son had to deal with the cruelness of other children. Tolerance of others should be taught at an early age. I personally have a skin disorder, psoriasis. I have permanent marks on my legs and arms that will never go away and is a constant reminder that as soon as I think I see a flare up to quickly restart my medicine regime. I hope that one day your son will get the confidence to wear shorts.

  6. Hi Sandi

    I know this was very difficult for you and your son children can be very rude to other children and make them feel bad when they should be able to cheer them up and let them know it is going to be alright. I know at the age of 1 children so not understand how to cheer up another child but the parents should let them see them cheer up another child and the child will learn from them. I am so happy that doctor found a cure that is helping your son.
