week 6

I believe children’s learning and how they learn should be measured due to the fact this is where professional gets the data they need to find the norm and see where area of improvement are needed. Assessment is the heart of education. Teachers, professional and parents uses test scores to see how a child is doing. What there academic strength is. And any weaknesses the child might be experiencing.
I choice China cause I read a article and  it really interested me.  Why do Chinese students do so well at school.  Children start school at age 3 there are several test children have to go thru in order to be able to start school.
Flyers
(at Level A2 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
Movers
(at Level A1)
Starters
(below Level A1)
Chinese students attend classes five or six days a week from early morning (about 7am) to early evening (4pm or later). On Saturdays, many schools hold required morning classes in science and math. Many students also attend or cram school, in the evening and on weekends. Much like tutoring in the West, these schools offer additional Chinese, English, science and math classes and one-on-one tutoring.

Part of me think it  is  a  good idea to test children so  the professionals can get important information. Students can get proper help if they are lacking in certain area’s but once again after doing a lot of resource I know  understand all the pressure  not only here but in other countries all the testing can do  to a child.

  1. Thank you for sharing the information you found about the Chinese and how they test. I think it is important to look at what is happening in other parts of the world and how they view school. To the Chinese, I believe that school and education is very important to them. If my students had to go to school from 7-4 and then go to tutoring, they would be not so nice children. They would be tired and cranky and possibly just mean. Doing this for so many years also will wear a person down. Hopefully during the day the Chinese children have some free time and exercise time as well. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I think too much emphasis is placed on academics. In Nigeria, nursery schools close by 1pm, primary between 1pm and 2pm, and most secondary schools close between 2pm and 4pm. This depends on if its a public or private school. Private schools are more committed to teaching and are willing to put in extra hours so they tend to have longer hours. I believe academic testing shouldn't be too emphasized other forms of testing should be made a part of school testing.

  3. I think that it is interesting that you mentioned Chinese children. I had a friend when I was doing my undergrad and she was Chinese. She said that people had the notion that her daughter was smarter because of ethnicity but she said in reality it was the work.

  4. Hi Sandi,

I like your post about children in China. I wonder what do the children do there for fun? I think that testing children in the beginning of the school year is good because the teacher gains information on to what to teach. A base of where to start, then group the children by levels. I think testing at the end of the year is important to see the child's growth.

  5. I too have the same question as Tarshia, what do children in China do for fun? It sounds like school is the only focus for children in China.

As for testing for levels of achievement, I have mixed thoughts and feel we should find alternate means of measuring assessment. Having known people personally who do not test well so tests are not an accurate measure of achievement for them.
