**PLAY** week 4
My connections to play
“Play keeps us vital and alive. It gives us an enthusiasm for life that is irreplaceable. Without it, life just doesn’t taste good” Lucia Capocchione“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” Plato
When I was young my grand father was my biggest supporter and hero. He would play games with us, take us bowling and on exploring adventures. He would turn a walk around the block so exciting fun and we learned at the same time. I remember setting on the floor playing with dolls, having tea parties and playing school. I could not imagine not being able to play and explore new things.
I think play is different then when I was a young child. Children now are going to day care facilities. There day’s are more structured. Children have more opportunity to play with different types of educational toys, technology toys also is another great improvement since I was little now kids have computers and all sort of electronic toys to help in playing and learning.
Play activities are essential to healthy development for children. Activities children participate in can stimulate and influence there development. Children need to play in order to development their fine, gross motor skills, language, socialization, and problem solving. Children should experience a variety of material to play and learn with.
I loved how you described the walks with your grandfather; it sounds so magical. In the summers, my brothers and I were sent to our maternal grandparents who lived on a farm, and we worked, but it was like play, and we did play as well. We learned flower names, and had kittens and calves and learned to drive a tractor once our feet could reach the brake and clutch. You are so right that now kids go to daycare; grandparents work or live far too away.
ReplyDeleteI love how you state play keeps us vital and alive. That statement is very true. It is so important to play as children and as adults!
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather was also a huge part of my play. We would go fishing alot with orange cheese. Thank you for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteI never had grandparents or aunties and uncles we could go spend holidays with. Play has become more interesting in terms of types of toys because everything adults use, has its toy replica.
ReplyDeleteSandi, I love how you mentioned that since children are in daycare, their day is more structured. They don't have the opportunity to simply explore things around the house or in other environments. They are often told what to do, even in daycare. Children do need more time to explore and play at their own pace, instead of being told "It's Play Time!"
