week 2 Personal Research Journey

I  have  choice  to  do  my  research  on The importance of family support. I really think it is important for children’s learning and how they will grow into mature adult’s children is proud to have their parents attend school functions.  Knowing they have love and support from their parents I think can help all children in the long run. While doing some research this week I have found a lot of information pertaining to my topic from the importance of parents from different heritage being involved in their children learning and helping teachers learn cultures believes to the parents with children with disabilities and how it’s the law for parents to attend meeting and help with their children needs and education.

I really  could use  some  help  pertaining to my topic and if  anyone could  offer some  positive information to help understand the importance of getting parents involved and how  to  make parents  get involved

  1. I think that in order to get the parents involved you have to find a common connection with them. You have to make them feel like they are part of the process. I am always asking parents to bring things in to the classroom toilet paper tubes ect. so their child and themselves feels as though they contribute

  2. Family support is very important-you have to make them feel they are part of your classroom/school. If you are able to get them involved as Jennifer said and invite them to help if they can in the classroom.

  3. Hello!
I understand you chose a very important and interesting topic. Parents involvement in their child's life throughout the different stages is so important for a healthy development. Unfortunately many parents do not have this clear and slack in such involvement, not realizing how much damage they are creating. If a child doesn't feel that he/she is important to his/her parents; it will be very hard for them to believe other people will actually care for them. This creates a sense of insecurity that will interfere with their development later in life.

  4. Hello Sandi!

Great post! Family support is always important. I build relationships with all my parents because I feel the need it makes them feel as if they are a part of my team and the process of what we're going through. I also encourage them to join PTA and attend as many school activities as they can to ensure they are supportive of their child/children.

  5. I agree that parent support can make all the difference in a child's education. Unfortunately, some parents are unable to provide support in the ways you may want them to and this is not because they do not care but because they have many other tasks on their already full plates. Yes, their children should be their focus but earning a living to ensure that their children are fed and able to stay in a warm place is also important. I previously taught in a very diverse school and many families were unable to come to school for American Education Week and/or other school events due to their jobs. Many of the teachers at the school recognized that having someone attend these events for the students was better than no one so often times we would allow siblings to miss class to support their brother or sister. I think with families that are unable to come into the classroom or donate items to the classroom you have to be creative in the ways that you can involve them and provide them with opportunities to support their students. It could be something simple like asking those families to send in a note saying they are proud of their child if they are unable to attend an event. Or you could video tape the event and burn a DVD for the family.

  6. Sandi,

I think you'll find some really valuable research for your simulation. Family involvement is crucial for a child's success in school and in life. I think us, as a birth through 12th grade system can really improve on the strategies and supports that are in place to increase family involvement. In our society, we are so busy and consumed with our own lives that sometimes we lose focus on the things that mean the most to us. Sometimes all we need is a little reminder that brings us back to what makes it all worthwhile. As a parent of 2 children under the age of 6, I know how important it is for my husband and I to be involved with our children's education. We try, but as an early childhood educator I feel that sometimes I should be doing a better job too! I'll be interested in finding out what you discover and new strategies to encourage the home/school connection with multi-lingual families.
